PMC's status report plan for wadas falls flat
PUNE: The Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) attempt to establish the 'structural stability' of wadas in Peth areas of the city has come to naught.
Following incidents of wada collapses due to heavy rains last year, the PMC had invited applications from engineers to be part of a panel to inspect the stability of the wadas and decide whether they needed to be pulled down.

But the advertisement issued by the city engineer's department received poor response, as only three engineers replied. Moreover, they too didn't turn up when the department called a meeting. City engineer Prashant Waghmare attributed the poor response to the tedious nature of the job of inspecting the wadas.
Also, most of them were busy with their private jobs. "Although we have once again invited applications from structural engineers, our department is still sending notices to owners of dilapidated wadas," Waghmare said.
"Portions of around 50 structures posing a threat have been pulled down by our officials." Junior engineer Sukumar Patil told TOI that the regular inspection of the Peth areas had been carried out in April and May.
"Announcements have been circulated through newspapers and notices, appealing citizens to bring to our notice any old structure that may be dangerous." "We have also issued around 175 notices to owners of wadas to carry out repairs.
Around 450 occupants have been notified to vacate their structures as they could collapse in the rains," he said. But many occupants of the wadas find it financially difficult to carry out repairs.
Most of the owners are averse to carrying out repairs as the wadas are rented out for a pittance. PMC records show that there are around 18,000 properties located in Kasba Peth, Budhwar Peth, Shaniwar Peth, Nana Peth, Bhavani Peth, Ganj Peth and Narayan Peth areas. According to preliminary reports, around 8,000 of these properties are very old.
